PROMAX collaborates in the European project COCONUT
In the R&D&I laboratory of PROMAX, fibre optic equipment is developed and designed to meet the needs of the professional installer.
Our catalogue of instrumentation for optical fibre consists of a wide range of equipment to suit any need or situation: optical spectrum analysers, fusion splicers, optical power meters, optical attenuators, laser sources, RF-optical converters, etc..
All our equipment meets telecommunications regulations in order to certify fibre optic installations. The extensive experience in the development of this equipment has been one of the characteristics by which the European Union has relied on PROMAX to participate in the research project COCONUT.
The project COCONUT is a research project funded by the European Union within the 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development.

The project covers three years, from late 2012 to 2015.
The project has two important new concepts:
- It introduces the concept of one lambda per user: each user has its own communication, with a capacity greater than in the existing networks.
Additionally, these developments should be reached at the lowest cost on the user’s equipment and with greater energy efficiency.
COCONUT project reference architecture
The COCONUT project consortium consists of academic and industrial partners active in the field of fiber access networks, including one major network operator (British Telecom), one system supplier (Ericsson AB), one commercial provider of advanced photonic devices (III-V Lab) and two SMEs (PROMAX Electronica and Optronics).
PROMAX brings its expertise in optical communications and it will conduct developments in instrumentation for UD-WDM PON.
Upon completion of this project, the consortium aims to have achieved the following results:
- Access network architecture and system design.
- Network feasibility study.
- Identification of system requirements and specifications.
- Development and characterization of the coherent UD-WDM prototype transceivers.
- Development and implementation of the appropriate control protocol for the proposed network.
- Integration and testing, which will be including lab tests and field trial.
The main target of the project is to demonstrate simple and coherent solutions at 1 and 10 Gbs allowing:
- Ultra dense WDM (UD-WDM), with no/limited filters.
- Higher power budget.
- Network scalability.
- Simplified network operation.
- igher power efficiency.
- Low-cost levels.
Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (SSA in Italy will act as the project coordinator. The other academic partners include the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC) in Spain, and Athens Information Technology centre (AIT) in Greece.
